flowers, raindrops and macro photography

Fuji X10 manages to do a nice job for macro photography. It is somewhat uncomfortable to get at ~1 to 5 cm distance from the subject, but the results are very nice. After playing with macro lenses for Canon DSLR, I would say that the best macro lens is a compact camera. Fuji X10 has two macro modes (two dedicated macro modes on the macro menu) – macro and super macro. the first one just “encourages” the Fuji X10 to try to focus at very close distances, while the magnification factor stays normal. In Super Macro mode however, at wide-angle, the camera manages to focus as close as 2 or 3cm. It actually gets tricky not to touch the subject with the lens.

However, as long as the subject does not run away, nor does it burn or scratch the lens, Fuji X10 macro works perfectly.

Macro photography is tricky as you need to find a good balance between a narrow aperture, the light going down and shutter speed. Ideally in macro photography you want to use a tripod and stop-down the lens as much as possible. At such a small distance to the subject the depth of field becomes razor-thin.

One of the strengths of a compact digital camera is macro photography. By using a small sensor (compared to an APS-C sensor like the Fuji X-E1), the Fuji X10 has a larger depth of field at equal apertures. This helps enormously as you do not need to stop down to F11-F22 as is customary in macro photography.
